Toxins Linked to Belly Fat and Obesity

Are plastics thwarting your best weight loss efforts? A new study from Harvard School of Public Health and published in the journal Environmental Health found that commonly-found toxins in plastics are linked to both general obesity and abdominal obesity. Known as Bisphenol A or BPA for short, these hormone disruptors have been primarily found in plastic, including plastic food and beverage packaging.

Harvard scientists studied the effects of BPA to see low-dose exposures of the toxin increased abdominal or general fat in humans. They were aware of previous studies showing that low-dose BPA increased obesity in rodents. The scientists assessed the urinary BPA concentrations, body mass index, and waist circumference in 2747 adult men and women ranging in age from 18 to 74.

Their findings aren’t surprising given the toxin is a known hormone and metabolism disruptor. The higher the urinary concentrations of BPA (indicating higher exposures), the more likely a person was obese and experiencing abdominal obesity. The adults with the highest amounts of BPA in their urine were 75 percent more likely to be obese than those with the lowest amounts of BPA.

They concluded that “higher BPA exposure is associated with general and central obesity in the general adult population in the United States.”

As a result of studies like the Harvard one, toxins like BPA, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), and phthalates are increasingly being referred to as “obesogens.”

Keep reading to discover 6 ways to reduce your BPA exposure and 5 other things you can do to protect yourself…

30 Simple Ways to Supercharge Your Diet

It’s not difficult to eat healthier.  Just making simple changes to your diet can ramp up the vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients you’re getting.  And better nutrition quickly spells better health.  To make it easier for you, I’ve compiled 30 simple ways to supercharge your diet.  Subscribe to my free e-mag World’s Healthiest News for more great ways to supercharge your diet.

1.  Use avocado instead of butter on your sandwiches, buns, or on veggies.

2.  Use naturally-sweet stevia instead of sugar.  Be wary of powdered stevia that contain other sweeteners though.  Stevia tastes sweet but doesn’t contain any form of sugar like glucose, fructose, maltose, etc. so it doesn’t impact blood sugar levels.

3.  Drink green tea lemonade (sweetened with stevia, of course) instead of bottled ice tea or soda.  Check out my recipe here.

4.  Choose brown rice pasta instead of white pasta. Better yet, use kelp noodles if you can find them.

5.  The same is true of rice.  Choose brown rice instead of white rice.

6.  Use stock instead of bouillon to make soup.  It’s really easy to do if you add vegetables and water to a slow cooker and allow them to cook for at least 4 to 6 hours to extract the nutrients.  Strain the vegetables out and use the liquid as the base for soup.  Bouillon is notorious for containing the harmful neurotoxin monosodium glutamate (MSG).

7.  Add a can of beans to a pot of homemade soup.  It immediately ramps up the protein and fiber and helps you feel full longer so you’re less likely to crave unhealthy snacks.

8.  Make your own salad dressings.  They take a minute to make and help you obtain important fats.  Use the 3:1 ratio:  three parts oil (like olive or walnut oil) to one part acid (like lemon or lime juice, or apple cider vinegar).  Add herbs and a little unrefined sea salt and maybe a teaspoon of honey (if desired).  Shake in a jar or blend with a hand blender.

9.  Switch from peanut butter to raw, organic almond butter.  Peanuts are vulnerable to molds called aflatoxins which are highly inflammatory.  Almonds are less vulnerable.

10.  Eat kale chips instead of potato chips.  You can purchase them ready-made or you can make your own by tossing kale in a little olive oil and unrefined sea salt, then bake at 275 until light and crispy (usually 15 to 25 minutes).

Keep reading to discover the food to eat instead of ice cream…

Superfood Decreases Risk of Death by 26 Percent

We keep hearing about the many health benefits of a Mediterranean diet and now there’s even more cause to celebrate this healthy way of eating.

Results of a new study called the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Spain) have been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Researchers at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona, Spain conducted a study of 40,622 people ranging in age from 29 to 69.  They followed the participants’ food and beverage consumption for over 13 years to determine whether there were any dietary factors that would reduce the risk of dying prematurely from cancer, cardiovascular disease, or another cause of death.

The scientists found that those whose consumption of olive oil was the highest had a reduced risk of dying by 26% and a decreased risk of dying from heart disease by a whopping 44% compared to people who did not consume olive oil. During that time 956 people died of cancer, 416 died from cardiovascular disease, and 417 died from other causes.

The researchers found an inverse correlation between the amount of olive oil consumed and the likelihood of death.  For every 10 grams of olive oil consumed there is a 7% decreased risk of dying and a 13% decreased risk of specifically dying from heart disease.  In other words, the more olive oil consumed, the lower the chance of death.  The scientists observed no direct correlation between death from cancer and olive oil consumption.  (Keep in mind however that many other studies found that olive oil consumption is linked to a reduction in breast, respiratory tract, upper digestive tract and colorectal cancers).

The authors of the study Genevieve Buckland and colleagues noted in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that olive oil has been shown to improve systemic inflammation in the body as well as blood sugar control in other clinical studies.

Other research has shown that a compound found in olive oil, hydroxytyrosol (HT), helps protect the cells that line our blood vessels from being damaged by free radicals.

Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid which is an Omega-9 fatty acid, one of the few oils rich in this particular fat.  Recent studies have shown this fatty acid reduces cholesterol levels and normalizes high blood pressure.  Olive oil also contains vitamin E and many phytonutrients that play a role in the protection against chronic diseases, including heart disease.

Choose extra virgin olive oil as the best results in research have been obtained from this oil, not just virgin olive oil.  Ideally, choose cold-pressed since it helps ensure the nutrients and oils remain intact.  When cooking with olive oil, keep the temperature on low to medium heat since olive oil begins to smoke around 325 degrees Fahrenheit.  The smoke point is the point at which the oil changes molecular structure and is no longer healthy.

I use olive oil in place of butter or shortening in most baking recipes with excellent results.  Simply keep the baking temperature around 300 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent toxic acrylamide from forming, which may mean a slightly longer baking time for recipes normally baked at 350 degrees.

I also encourage you to make your own salad dressings.  Just use two parts olive oil to one part lemon juice or vinegar, add some berries or herbs, a teaspoon of honey, some unrefined salt, and a teaspoon of mustard as a quick and easy salad dressing.

New Research Determines the Cancer Risk

Researchers at the University of Southampton are trying to develop a method for predicting the risk of cancer

cancer-research

Currently, only five percent of the budget for health and medical research in the UK is spent on disease prevention

Researchers at the University of Southampton are trying to develop a method for predicting the cancer.
The research team, led by Professor Paul Little, will collect and analyze clinical data and blood samples from 20 000 patients with lung or colon cancer. The aim of the study was to identify the most frequently occurring symptoms and markers, which later could serve as a diagnostic criterion.
The scientists will also conduct genetic testing to determine how informative they can be and how much information, outside of the clinically available, may be revealed only from the genetic testing.
The ultimate goal of the five-year study is to improve the diagnosis of these diseases. Currently in the UK GPs have to refer the emergency cases to a specialist within two weeks, but the non-urgent – up to 62 days. Experience has shown that in many cases it takes more time and often patients have to visit their GP doctor more than once, in order to be referred to a specialist.
According to Professor Little the targeting of cancer patients and their referring from the GPs to the oncologist must happen faster. But at the same time the system of the health care should not be overloadied by people with low cancer risk, who will be subjected to unnecessary diagnostic and its side effects. Waiting for the results also may be too strained and painful, so this step should also be fully shortened.
Currently, only five percent of the budget for health and medical research in the UK is spent on disease prevention. For many diseases, particularly such as the various cancers, the earlier identified and diagnosed the disease is, the better the prognosis and final outcome for the patient.
This prospective study builds on previous research that was seeking predictive symptoms based on retrospective data.

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You: Seafood & Pregnancy

Has anyone else been following Environmental Health News’ series Pollution, Poverty, People of Color as if it were the new Mad Men? No? Personally, I can’t get enough. I especially can’t get one article from last month out of my head. It was about how contaminated fish warnings fail to reach the people most at risk.

It’s probably stuck in my mind because I’m pregnant. As I  (s l o w l y)  make my way around my city, day in and day out, I have a hard time not screaming as I watch other pregnant moms eating things I know they should not be eating, and doing things I know they should not be doing (what is with everyone walking into nail salons and willingly breathing that unsafe-for-anyone air?). Do they not know? Or are they just ignoring the warnings?

But fish really surprised me. Even conventional OBs who aren’t particularly attuned to environmental health issues tend to warn their patients not to eat certain very contaminated fish that are known to contain mercury, PCBs, and more. If doctors fail to issue this warning, most baby books and pregnancy websites take up their slack. So what’s Environmental Health News talking about?

Well, seafood isn’t a cut and dried issue. It’s nuanced and complicated. As I wrote in The Conscious Kitchen, rockfish can mean more than sixty different kinds of fish on the Pacific West Coast. There are eighty-two different species of groundfish, and more than forty different species can be called snapper. Which means that warnings about big predator fish like shark, tuna, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel containing elevated levels of mercury might make it to most pregnant people, but the subtler stuff just doesn’t.

People—pregnant or not—tend to be less aware of advisories about local waterways (both fresh and saltwater-like), and about which local seafood might harbor industrial chemicals and pesticides. As the article I cannot get out of my mind states, these are linked to cancer, reproductive effects, and various other health problems. Let’s be honest, these present risks for everyone—not just pregnant women and children.

Local officials do issue warnings, but too often residents either aren’t getting them or choose to ignore them. Sometimes they know about the warnings, but need a cheap source of protein. Or they come from fishing communities and are inclined to eat what they’ve always eaten, whatever the health advisories say. There are even people interviewed in the article who say that if the water looks clean, they assume the fish is safe to eat.

Except it’s not safe. And so the advisories need to be louder and more clear, and there needs to be more education, including about how the contaminants made their way into the air we breathe and the waters we fish. No one should be eating unsafe food, and knowing that it happens more frequently in low-income, minority, or indigenous communities is the kind of thing that keeps you (or is it just me?) up at night. As the article clearly explains, this is an environmental justice issue. If inadequate risk warnings aren’t reaching these communities, states need to try harder. Advisories need to take language barriers into account and, in general, be a lot simpler for everyone to understand and heed.

Here’s hoping Dr. Jeanne Conry, president-elect for the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) agrees. She’s the winner of the 2012 U.S. EPA Environmental Health Heroes of the Pacific Southwest in the category Children’s Environmental Health and could really help spread the word. Hey, Dr. Conry, if you need help, we’d love to join the crusade.

9 Habits That “Steal” from Your Health (2 part)

There are some habits which can ruin your health

Freckles
Freckles may be cute, but the truth is that the result of the impact of the sun on the skin. Redheads have a genetic tendency to form freckles, but can be seen on other skin types. Freckles may disappear during the winter months, but will likely appear immediately on unprotected skin in sunny weather. Therefore, use a sunscreen with at least a factor 30.

Freshly Squeezed Juices for Health and Beauty

shampoo bad for health

If you have a sensitive scalp shampoo can irritate your skin

Shampoo
The shampoo foams can be very good, but it can dry the scalp. This is due to the ingredient sodium sulfate luaril. It removes dirt from the hair and scalp, but during this process, dewatered oil glands and scalp, leaving you with dry scalp and dandruff. And if you have a sensitive scalp can get irritation and even hair loss. If you have similar issues, look at the next purchase shampoo that does not contain sodium luaril sulphate. The product will not make so much foam, but will be less irritating to your skin.
Sleeping pills
Many women use pills to sleep. But there is one drawback – the longer you use pills to help you sleep, the more your body will get used to it and build resistance and the next will need to take a higher dose to be effective. Before you reach the moment to use chemicals, try other strategies for sleep. Avoid TV before bed, take a few deep breaths. See some exercise before sleep and some tips for sleep.

Health Benefits of Vegetables Juices
Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits are known to contain healthy elements; however, citric acid they contain combined with aggressive toothbrush can cause premature wear of the tooth enamel. If you like to drink citrus juices, try to combine them with the milk product to neutralize the negative reaction in the mouth. Do not brush your teeth with toothpaste immediately after eating – better let the natural mechanisms in the mouth and saliva to do the job,
Going to sleep too late
Lack of sleep can lead to weak immunity and too much stress. Go to bed at the same time every day and wake up at the same time every morning. If you want to sleep well take a bath before bed, read a good book or drink a cup of warm milk.

Fruits and Vegetables Make us Happy

Eat fruits and vegetables to be happy!

Fruits and vegetables improve your mood and bring happiness and mental health, a study of 80,000 Britons conducted by the Medical School in Warwick, central England.
The more fruits and vegetables we eat, the better we feels, says chief of staff Sarah Stewart-Brown, quoted by WebMD. The results of the study were published in a special edition “Social Indicators Research”.

When And From Which Vitamins And Minerals We Need

fruits and vegetables happiness

Fruits and vegetables have a lot of benefits for health

According to Stewart-Brown happiest people take seven servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Scientists have found that one serving is 85 grams – for example a small apple has 141.7 g. Scientists do not define specific types of fruits and vegetables, they also recognized that they could not establish a mechanism of impact of these foods on the mind and mood.
But many nutritionists have repeatedly pointed out that fruit and vegetable ration mood of the people. This becomes their habit and brings joy.
According to the researchers effect on people from less fruit-vegetable servings a day is equal to one third of the negative effect of job loss.

Anti Aging – foods that promote longevity
Specialists recommend being careful if we have problems with stomach. Most of the fruits and vegetables have diuretic effect. Cabbage, cucumbers, apples and plums are natural remedies for constipation but also act as irritate the lining of the intestine and as a result, can cause diarrhea. If you constantly take too much, the membranes can be covered with sores, and that provoke cancer.
As with everything else balance is very important when consuming fruits and vegetables.

Important! What Are the Different Types of Vitamins And the Need of Them!

Vitamins are not health in bottles or boiled broccoli for dinner!

vitamins

One pill does not solve the problem with vitamins

Do you remember when you were a child, how often do you had to hear “Eat your salad – it has lots of vitamins” or “Drink your vitamins.” No wonder if you are now parents to say the same sentences to your children.
We all know that vitamins are very useful thing. Each has a role that playes in the development and maintenance of our body. However, many of the vitamins in fruits and vegetables are “lost” on the way between the manufacturers and our plates. The more processed the food is, the less vitamins remain in it. But perhaps the biggest “killer” of vitamins in our diet is its intensive processing and refining, especially in foods such as breakfast cereals and sweets. The point is that the average person can not sufficiently diversify their menu in order to be able to add all the necessary vitamins. Studies show that almost all diseases can be obtained from a lack of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. That is why it is important to know the vitamins and their role in our existence.

There are two types of vitamins – fat soluble and water soluble

It is important to know which vitamins belong to these groups, and mainly why.
When you eat food that contains fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are stored in the fatty tissues in the body and liver. So they can “wait” until the body needs them. Some vitamins can be placed on hold for up to six months, others can endure a few days. This group includes the vitamins A, D, E and K.
In the water-soluble vitamin group, cycle passes differently. Naturally, as one has the function to be stored, the other will not have it. Rather than linger in one place, these vitamins “travel” throughout the body via the circulatory system. What is not used, is discarded with the urine. These are the vitamins that underlying in the quote for “expensive urine”. Because there is absolutely no need to have storage of them – simply because you cannot. But since they do not last long in our body they need more often “recharging”. In these group are vitamin C and those of B-group (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12).

33 Tips, Tricks, and Health Benefits of Celery

Celery is 95% water, very alkaline, and filled with fiber. Its weight loss benefits are well-known, but you would be surprised at its other amazing health properties.

We consider it a powerfood that should be eaten daily.

13 Health Benefits:

1. Celery has blood pressure reducing properties. It contains active phthalides, which relax the muscles of the arteries that regulate blood pressure so the vessels dilate. Phthalides also reduce stress hormones, which can cause blood vessels to constrict.

2. The fiber is very good for weight loss.

3. Celery is purported to be a negative calorie food, which means it takes the body more calories to digest it than the food itself contains. While this is not strictly accurate, a single stalk of celery still has only a few calories due to being full of cellulose. The addition of celery to your diet will help you tremendously with your weight loss efforts. I consider it so important to weight loss that it is an element in my Weight Loss Boot Camp.

4. Celery contains plant hormones that calm and soothe the central nervous system, which will make your losing weight an easier thing to do.

5. Celery leaves are a source of flavonoid antioxidants zeaxanthin, lutein and beta-carotene, which have antioxidant, cancer-protective, and immune-boosting functions.

6. Celery seed is used to treat colds, arthritis, and diseases of the liver and spleen in Ayurvedic medicine.

6 Meatless Monday Recipes for Vegetarian Awareness Month

The idea of Meatless Monday is simple – don’t eat meat on Mondays. If everyone skipped meat even one day a week, the impact on our environment and health would be remarkable. For vegetarians, this is a given. The goal of Meatless Monday is to effortlessly convince dedicated meat eaters to make the move – for health, for the environment, for animal rights, or maybe even all three.

As October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, each Monday becomes a double opportunity to eat more vegetable- and plant-based meals. We want to make that an easy (and delicious) transition for those who aren’t as used to a meatless meal. With four Mondays remaining in October, you’ve got four prime opportunities to do some good for your health.

Grilled Portobella Mushroom Burgers

You don’t even need a recipe for these, but you do need a big appetite. Brush the in-season mushrooms lightly with olive oil, add freshly chopped herbs like rosemary or thyme for more flavor, then place top-down on a hot grill. Really bulk up this veggie burger by grilling red bell peppers, too. Then, pile the mushroom and pepper on a bun with your favorite burger toppings and enjoy. This pairs well with a pile of homemade baked sweet potato fries, or we like the Alexia brand frozen sweet potato fries.

Soup and Salad

The options are practically endless with soup and salad. This is a vegetarian meal you’ve probably enjoyed for years and didn’t even recognize that it was meatless. Whether you go canned or homemade, your favorite soup, like this Hunky Vegetable Soup, will warm up a cool fall evening while filling and satisfying. A crisp salad with fall’s seasonal vegetables, including kale, apples, pears, and broccoli, will offer a cool, complementary crunch. A slice of homemade vegan bread will finish this meal perfectly.

Slow-Cooker Mexican Style Vegetarian Stuffed Peppers

The Crock Pot can be your closest cooking companion in the winter months as you make heartier meals that require a slow, warm simmer. These stuffed peppers practically make themselves when you stuff them with brown rice, black beans, corn, green chilis, and flavor agents like onion, garlic, cayenne pepper, and cumin. Even your meatiest eaters won’t realize there’s no meat in these.

Homemade Pizza

Pizza is always a crowd pleaser whether it’s piled with sausage or not. When you make the pizza at home, you control the ingredients, and in this case you get to pile it high with fresh veggies. This Nicoise Pizza is simple and gourmet with Gruyere cheese, Kalamata olives, and roasted red peppers. Fresh spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, and even fruit like pear and pineapple are all perfect pie toppers.

Spaghetti Squash with Marinara

A healthier alternative to traditional pasta is to bake a spaghetti squash. The mild flavor and sticky texture are so similar to spaghetti noodles that you’ll be able to pass this by the pickiest of eaters. Squash are in season during October, making this meal even more environmentally friendly. A homemade marinara tops this like a traditional spaghetti dish, or you can make your own with simple fresh ingredients.

Vegan Shepherd’s Pie

You could take your vegetarian night to the next level with a hearty shepherd’s pie that is not only meatless but completely free of animal-products. Tofu, tempeh, mushrooms, or black beans become your vegetarian protein, kale or spinach, mixed vegetables like peas and carrots, and of course a heaping helping of mashed potatoes. With leftovers, your lunches can be meatless, too!

SARS Is Coming Back? (VIDEO)

In Britain has been isolated a new deadly virus similar to SARS, reported BBC

Already registered two such cases and the World Health Organization issued a special notice.
Male from Qatar was brought to London hospital with symptoms of SARS. Laboratory tests confirmed that the perpetrator was 99.5% identical to that of the SARS outbreak (SARS), which paralyzed lungs and in many cases fatal.

New DEADLY Strain of Bird Flu Strikes the World!

SARS virus

The SARS virus killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia

49-year-old man admitted to hospital in Qatar on September 3, and 7 was already in intensive care. On September 11 brought him to London as his condition worsened, and the diagnosis was not clear.
Virologists compared samples of the virus found in men from Qatar to those of 60-year-old man who died earlier in Saudi Arabia with similar symptoms. It turned out that they are almost identical.
Because now the world’s only known two cases, experts in London say that the risk of widespread virus, but called for more vigilance.

Which Is the Newest DEADLY Virus Threat
SARS, also known as syndrome of acute respiratory disease is a particular form of viral infection that destroys the airways. Its cause, and is now registered in the man from Qatar, belong to the coronavirus. They paralyze the tiny cilia in the lungs, which serve as clearing of secretions. This pneumonia can knock a person of any age. From her sick and young, healthy people who have not had any complaints before.
