Scientists have discovered 21 new genes related to cholesterol. For the purposes of the study were analyzed genetic mutations in more than 90 000 people.
Scientists identified genetic variations that are associated with changes in the values of “good” HDL and “bad” LDL cholesterol. Among their main findings is that some variants are more likely to occur in men, and others – women.
It is believed that the new findings expand the development of new drugs and treatments of cardiovascular disease due to high cholesterol, experts said.
Maintaining low levels of “bad” LDL and high in “good” HDL cholesterol reduces the risk of atherosclerotic plaque formation and development of angina, stress experts.
About 20% of people with high levels of LDL cholesterol are resistant to statins – drugs that help slow the development of atherosclerosis.
The study provides valuable information about genes that could potentially help us in the fight against cardiovascular disease, said Dr. Helene Wilson from the British Heart Foundation.
The growing importance of deciphering the genetic code is allowing to the scientists to explore new opportunities for purposeful and modern medicines and treatments, added Dr Wilson. This is why the research on the topic continues.

Research scientists show that drinking soft drinks can leads to dramatic increases in fat around the liver and skeletal muscle. This can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.
U.S. study shows that people who drink soda every day for six months, have from 132% to 142% increase of fat in the liver from 117 percent to 122 percent increase in fat around the bone, and 30% increase in triglyceride levels. This consumption has contributed to 11% increase in cholesterol compared to those who drank other drinks like water and milk.
Even so-called diet drinks dramatically increase the width of the waist.

Research Center for Health Sciences at the University of Texas, USA, showed disappointing results. Scientists have observed over 475 people for 10 years. The results showed that those who drank diet soft drinks had an average 70% increase in the waist compared to those who did not drink any. People who drank two diet drinks a day had to do 500% increased fat around the waist.
Another study by the same team conducted on laboratory mice with aspartame, an artificial sweetener that increases the blood sugar, showed that people weight gain when glucose in the liver is too much, because the excess is converted into body fat. I.e. excessive consumption of soft drinks with aspartame also causes obesity.

British scientists have found that eating little and often is healthier than the traditional meals three times a day, report from Daily Mail. The experts advise people to eat nine times a day.

The separation of food intake in such a way that we could eat many times a day has beneficial effects on metabolism, compared to the same food consumed in fewer meals, said the leader of the research Dr. Susan Jebb.
In a recent study, researchers from Imperial College London, compared the diets of more than 2000 people from Britain, Japan, China and USA. Although they received the same amount of calories and food, half of the participants ate less than six times a day and the rest – more than six times a day.
The results showed that the first group had significantly higher systolic blood pressure (the pressure that blood has on blood vessels when the heart beats) than the people who ate more often. Participants in the first group were also significantly more comprehensive.
The Imperial College study supports previous studies advised to give up the idea to stick to three meals a day – breakfast, lunch and dinner. For example, scientists at the University of Athens made a study with more than 2000 children between the age of 9 and 13. The study showed that the children who ate five times a day reduced by 32.6% the risk of having high levels of bad cholesterol in comparison with their peers who ate at least twice a day.
It is unclear why eating more often has this positive impact, but according to one theory, frequent meals prevent high inflow of fatty acids, substances that are released from food and can lead to accumulation of fat in the arteries and contribute to high cholesterol levels.
