Genetically modified cow will produce allergy-free milk
Genetically modified cow that produces milk with low protein was created by scientists from New Zeeland, report from BBC.
The protein causes allergic reactions in a large number of children. It is expected that the gene modified cow will not stay alone and soon on the market there will be tons of “hypoallergenic” milk from herds of GM cows.
The process of cloning is the same as in the creation of Dolly the sheep. But “somehow” the cow was born without a tail.
After the cloning, the cow was submitted under genetic engineering with additional genetic material, which eliminates the natural gene for the production of milk protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLG). This protein is absent from human breast milk and cause allergies in some children.
Tests showed the new milk contains less than 2% beta-lactoglobulin and were much richer in the usual milk proteins that are necessary for the production of cheese.
In developed countries, between 2 and 3% of children are developing allergies to the proteins found in milk from cows. This is why there is and will be a big search demand for dairy product that is safe for those children, the researchers said.
A person allergic to milk develops various symptoms that can occur both in the first minutes after consumption, and a few hours later. The very symptoms include vomiting, stomach upsets, skin rashes and breathing difficulties.
