This approach has the potential to substantially change the screening for breast cancer

In the near future, many women may be spared the inconvenience of mammograms, instead it will be performed a simple blood test once a year for early detection of breast cancer.
British researchers had developed new test to detect traces of DNA of malignancy tumors before they become visible radiographically.
Scientists begin a clinical trial in a London hospital, where they hope to collect blood samples from 500 women in whom were found shadows after a mammogram. Then researchers will compare the DNA of women who were subsequently diagnosed with cancer with the DNA of healthy women in order to identify the tumor markers. The scientists have already identified several potential molecules.
If the study proves to be successful, a new one will be started, aiming to determine whether a blood test can be used for screening in women of middle and advanced age.
According to Dr. Jackie Shaw, the leader of the study, this approach has the potential to substantially change the screening for breast cancer in a very short time. Yet, it seems that the test can detect breast cancer before the appearance of lumps on X-rays. Also, the test could help physicians to individualize therapy by targeting what genetic abnormalities are present in the tumor, which would allow selecting a specific treatment with fewer side effects.
Every year in Britain are diagnosed over 40 000 new cases of breast cancer, 12 000 women lose their lives to the disease.
Researchers hope to be able to apply this technique for lungs and intestines.
