According to a poll, 26 percent of Britons are diagnosed with depression, compared with 12% of Italians. The study indicates that 1 in every 10 people in Europe suffers from the condition.
According to the experts, the higher rate in Britain may be due to better ways and means of diagnosis of depression, compared to other countries in Europe.
Others argue that the data is not shocking and that actually the climatic conditions of the island have a big impact on people. Low levels of seretonin can be caused by lack of sunlight. This leads to reduced episodes of happiness and peace, explain experts. The same statement is applicable for Scandinavia.
Women suffer twice as often as men from depression. The condition is found in all age groups. All racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups suffer from depression. Around three quarters of people who have had an episode of depression have at least one more before the end of their lives.
Britain is one of the best developed countries in Europe in many aspects. Therefore, the presence of an excessive amount of information of various kinds may also be a predictor of onset of depression, according to the experts.
To reduce the episodes of depression the experts recommend more physical activity, reducing the consumption of tobacco and alcoholic beverages and also avoiding the taking of crucial decisions during the depression.
In more severe conditions and inability to cope independently with the depression it is recommended consultation with a specialist in the field who will assign proper treatment for that purpose.
