Foods that May Seem Harmless But May Actually Cause Harm

Do you know that there are plenty of foods that may seem harmless but are in fact not good when taken in excess?

Yes, there are plenty of these foods in our own homes and kitchens and there is a big chance that we are not really aware of the dangers when we take too much of them.

Below is a list of these foods and the dangers they can bring into our bodies when we take them in excess.

Foods Rich in Sodium

Rich in Sodium foods

Do you know that the common salt we use for cooking as well as table salt is made of up a chemical compound of sodium and chlorine? Common salt and table salt is also called sodium chloride. These two types of salt contain about 40 per cent sodium, so one teaspoon of common salt or table salt, which approximately weighs around 5 grams, has about 2 grams of sodium.  Rock salt and sea salt on the other hand are almost entirely sodium chloride.

Why is it important to know these facts? Simply because the sodium content of the food we eat has an important implication on our health.  People who consume food containing very high sodium chloride are more predisposed to developing hypertension and are more at risk to suffer stroke. So what foods contain high sodium? Here’s a list: Beet Greens, Beets, Black-eyed beans, Buttermilk, Canned food, Celery, Cheese, Chick peas,  Corn meal, Dry lotus stems, Fish, Fruits, Garbanzo beans, Kelp, Leafy vegetables, Legumes, Meat, Milk, Olives, Oysters, Pulses, Salt, Salted butter or margarine, Sauces and seasonings, Sauerkraut, Self-rising flour, Shrimp, Spinach, Swiss Chard, Wakame, and Whelks.

Artificially Sweetened Drinks

For the want to continue enjoying soda drinks without the guilt, some people resort to drinking artificially sweetened drinks. What these people do not realize is the fact that yes, these artificially sweetened drinks may indeed be very low in calories but they also contain something else that health experts believe are harmful to the body. There are also studies conducted which showed that mice fed with artificially sweetened drinks had higher blood sugar levels.

Too Much Water

Do you know that drinking too much water can also be very dangerous? Drinking too much water can actually lead to hyponatremia or water intoxication. This is especially true if you are about to do something that requires too much effort and strength. One good example is if you’re joining a marathon or other sports activities that will take too long to finish. Drink water slowly, and do it in between rest periods. Again don’t drink too much as it will do more harm than good!
